"I believe that within each of us there is a loving and powerful healer, and that the healing journey is a gradual discovery and expression of this presence."
Rachana Vettickal, MS, LSW
Mind-Body Therapist
“I have always loved connecting with people and supporting them in moving into greater physical, emotional, and mental health and well-being. This choice to support health and self- care led me to the study of mind-body medicine and Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA),” says licensed social worker Rachana Vettickal. In December 2002, Vettickal became a member of the Mind-Body Medicine team at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern).
Vettickal earned a master’s degree in social work with a concentration in mental health from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The mind-body therapist notes, “It was through the practice of social work that I developed my abilities to immediately connect with and care for people during stressful and traumatic events. This love for supporting the emotional and spiritual health of people inspired me to study other forms of healing.”
At Midwestern, Vettickal works on a dedicated team with Dr. Sybilann Williams and other clinicians. The team cares for many of our gynecologic cancer patients. Through individual, couples and family counseling, Vettickal supports patients and their caregivers through the cancer journey. In the context of this compassionate relationship, she helps them develop and harness the power of their own inner strengths and resources for healing. Some of the additional tools she offers as needed in this process include mindfulness stress reduction, guided imagery, meditation, deep breathing, journaling, and expressive arts. She is also a Reiki master practitioner.
In addition, Vettickal leads many group activities at the hospital presented by the Mind-Body Medicine Department. She also educates patients and caregivers who are parents on how to support their children and help them deal with losses due to cancer. Vettickal spends time with the children, helping them cope with and begin to understand their experiences.
Vettickal cherishes her time with her husband and their two young boys. She says they love exploring new things together, and she enjoys watching her children learn and grow every day.
