"I am impressed with the expertise of the physicians at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, the technology and tools available, the friendliness of other stakeholders and the diversity of patients. I also like that patients get adequate face time with their care providers. Patients can ask as many questions as they like during their appointments with their providers, and have them answered."

Michelle Smekens, ND
Naturopathic Resident

For naturopathic resident Michelle Smekens, the opportunity to complete a two-year naturopathic oncology residency at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center was too good to pass up. It has given her a rare chance to work side-by-side with doctors and other clinicians from several disciplines, all of whom are focused on fighting cancer and helping cancer patients experience a good quality of life. In addition, Smekens’ residency has brought her closer to home. She grew up in suburban Milwaukee (Delafield, Wisconsin), which is about an hour away from the hospital.

In November 2010, Smekens began a yearlong series of oncology-focused rotations with staff naturopathic providers, oncologists and other clinicians at the hospital. Her training includes supervised clinical practice in oncology, homeopathic, nutritional, and botanical medicine, as well as coursework in these modalities. In the second year of her residency, Smekens will provide cancer patients with personalized naturopathic recommendations for natural therapies (e.g., vitamins, minerals, herbal medicines) that are safe and appropriate to pair with conventional cancer treatments.

Smekens received a bachelor’s degree in international studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She graduated with honors from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona with a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine.

She belongs to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians and the Illinois Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Smekens loves to spend time with her husband and their two children. Her hobbies include cooking, traveling, gardening, skiing, playing tennis, and just about any kid-related activity (e.g., swim lessons, karate, snowman building, play dates).
