"Dr. Ray and I work tightly together. We meet daily to discuss each of our patients that I have seen that day. Our combination has helped address the immediate needs and concerns of our patients and resulted in more timely, coordinated and comprehensive care."

Lily Liebling, PA-C
Physician Assistant

Experienced physician assistant Lily Liebling is an extended care provider for Dr. Stephen Ray, an oncoplastic and reconstructive surgeon at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern). She became part of the CTCA team in May 2009.

Liebling recalls, “The power of CTCA staff's smiling attracted me to join this wonderful team. It's exactly the way I have treated my patients during my over 20 years of practice in the medical field—by smiling and being a positive and compassionate care provider.”

Liebling earned a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Before moving to America, she received a medical degree from Shanghai Medical University in Shanghai, China. Liebling completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Shanghai Pu Dong Central Hospital, followed by a fellowship at Shanghai Medical University. She also completed a research fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and an associate research fellowship at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.

Certified as a physician assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, Liebling has served as a physician assistant at other hospitals in Chicago.

Liebling helps explain the treatment process and what to expect during and after surgery to patients who are to undergo oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery. She addresses concerns patients and their families have about the procedure(s) and offers comforting guidance to help lessen any anxiety they may have.

Liebling also cares for patients after they have undergone oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery following procedures such as a lumpectomy or mastectomy. She sees patients in follow-up visits after they have been discharged from the hospital and assists in coordinating their care when they return home. She contacts patients to follow their progress as they recover from surgery and heal, oftentimes evaluating digital photos patients send to see how a surgical wound is healing. She also communicates with patients' local physicians.

Additionally, Liebling assists Dr. Ray in surgical procedures and performs in-office procedures under his supervision, including breast tissue expansion, nipple/areola tattooing, radiofrequency ablation to remove precancerous skin lesions, and skin biopsies of suspected cancerous lesion(s).

She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, as well as the Illinois Chapter of the association.
