"The patient’s wishes must be respected during every step of the treatment process. It's his or her fight, and at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we are here to help them through it."
Dr. Kaoutar Tlemcani
Medical Oncologist
Dr. Kaoutar Tlemcani was drawn to the opportunity to be part of an organization that makes patient-focused care its mission. She says, “Cancer Treatment Centers of America is home to thought leaders and researchers who are committed to the advancement of cancer care. They are pioneers of integrative oncology and they offer patients every available tool to fight cancer. I knew this is where I needed to be.”
In May 2011, Dr. Tlemcani joined our team of medical oncologists and other cancer experts at our Illinois hospital. She works on a dedicated, oncology care team alongside a naturopathic oncology provider, registered and licensed dietitian, care manager, and registered nurse. But Dr. Tlemcani emphasizes, it’s patients who lead the team.
Dr. Tlemcani is devoted to providing the knowledge and resources cancer patients need to make informed decisions. She says, “Each patient is an individual with a unique background. It is my job to learn about my patients and figure out how to best serve each person’s needs.”
Board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology, Dr. Tlemcani earned a medical degree from Mohamed V University in Rabat, Morocco. She completed an internal medicine residency at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (an affiliate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine) in Englewood, New Jersey. During her tenure at Englewood Hospital, Dr. Tlemcani served as chief resident. Additionally, she completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York.
Prior to her position at CTCA, Dr. Tlemcani served as an attending physician in hematology/oncology at a Pennsylvania hospital.
Dr. Tlemcani has been published in CHEST, a well-known clinical journal, and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society for Integrative Oncology.
Dr. Tlemcani and her husband, Dr. Bruce Gershenhorn, who is also a medical oncologist at CTCA, enjoy spending time with their two-year-old son, Sami. She says, “I used to love being active and enjoying the outdoors, traveling, painting, and jumping on any opportunity to learn something new, until I became a mother. I am blessed with Sami. It has changed my priorities in life, like every mother. It has also helped me relate to my patients with young children.”
