Registered and licensed dietitian Jeanine Hiett strives to help patients optimize their nutritional status and maintain their quality of life during their fight against cancer.

She says, “By helping patients make better dietary choices, I can help them better tolerate prescribed cancer treatments, lessen treatment side effects, maintain functional capacity, and meet their nutritional needs.”

Hiett became a member of the nutrition therapy team at our Illinois cancer hospital in June 2010.

“You can feel the positive energy when you walk through the doors of the hospital,” she says. “I enjoy working with helpful and collaborative coworkers, and listening and working with patients to help them in any way I can.”

During Hiett’s consultations with patients, she helps them develop personalized nutritional plans. She recommends foods and beverages they can enjoy and tolerate during treatment. She also helps them deal head on with issues such as unintentional loss of weight and muscle mass, in addition to treatment side effects such as nausea, decreased appetite, taste changes, and difficulty swallowing.

Hiett listen to her patients, answers their questions and educates them about nutrition. She notes, “Unfortunately, cancer patients are overloaded with nutrition information from books, the Internet, family and friends, TV, and movies. I help them sort through this information and provide them with evidence-based nutrition advice.”

Hiett earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, where she double-majored in dietetics/nutrition, fitness and health. She was a four-year recipient of Purdue’s College of Consumer and Family Sciences Dean’s Merit Scholarship. As part of a study abroad program, Hiett also studied human nutrition at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Dublin, Ireland for a semester.

After graduating from Purdue, Hiett completed a dietetic internship through Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. She is a member of the American Dietetic Association and the Illinois Dietetic Association.

Hiett enjoys traveling, camping, cooking, eating, running, reading, and socializing with family and friends.
