Ervin Hire, MD at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center

Dr. Ervin Hire believes empowering patients to make educated decisions about their care is a critical component of his role as a medical oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center. He says, “The Patient Empowered Care® model is designed to empower patients and give them the knowledge to make decisions about the care they believe is best for them.”

An advocate of patient-centered care and a cancer survivor himself, Dr. Hire understands the challenges patients and their families face. And, he feels the patient-physician relationship is strongest when the two are working together as a team.

Dr. Hire helps lead our hospital’s clinic during the weekend, so that our patients have access to medical oncology, imaging, integrative care services, lab work, and rehabilitation services seven days a week. Dr. Hire and his team, which includes a clinic nurse, registered dietitian, naturopathic oncology provider, and nurse care manager, are available for appointments Saturday through Tuesday.

Board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, Dr. Hire earned a medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Southwestern Michigan Area Health Education Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in addition to a fellowship in medical oncology at Wayne State University.

Prior to pursuing his medical degree, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Hire has served cancer patients at medical practices in Kingsport, Tennessee and Petoskey, Michigan, as well as in Chicago, Illinois. Additionally, he has served as medical director of hospitals in Virginia and Tennessee.

Over the years, Dr. Hire has held a number of appointments on various hospital committees and as principal investigator for clinical research. He has also been a clinical instructor at Vanderbilt University, East Tennessee State University and Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, where he was awarded the James B. Hammond Humanitarian Award in 2009.

Dr. Hire has been published in the journal Cancer and the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Medical Association.

Family has always been important to Dr. Hire, who says the excellent care his sister received before she passed away at the age of 6, inspired him to become a doctor.

He says, “I have devoted my life to my family and my career. My wife and I have raised three children, who are all happy, educated and successful, and have their own families. And I love spending time with my four granddaughters.”

Dr. Hire adds, “My wife and I have been married many years. She has supported me and knows how devoted I am to patients, so never hesitate to contact my staff or myself for help.”
