"I am doctor who likes to get to know patients. I enjoy learning about their lives, what they have done, their interests and their family. It is important to me that my patients feel they can share their concerns with me. Getting to know them helps me understand what is important to them."

Dr. Dean Conterato
Radiation Oncologist

A board-certified radiation oncologist with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Dean Conterato provides cancer patients at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center with personalized, advanced radiation treatment. He has expertise in some of the most sophisticated therapeutic technology and innovative cancer treatments available, including Intraoperative Radiation Therapy and Stereotactic Radiosurgery.

Dr. Conterato believes the relationship between a doctor and his patient involves a cooperative effort. He says, “Together, we form a trusting relationship and interact to work towards the same goals. I empower my patients by giving them information and we reach a decision together about how to proceed with treatment of their cancer.”

Dr. Conterato earned a medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois. He completed an internship and a radiation oncology residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He served as Chief Resident in the Department of Radiation Oncology.

Before pursuing a medical degree, Dr. Conterato obtained a bachelor’s of science degree in chemistry from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.

Prior to joining our integrated team of cancer experts in August 2011, Dr. Conterato served as Director of Radiosurgery and as Director of a Radiation Oncology at two Chicago-area hospitals. Additionally, he served as a radiation oncologist at the Chicago Prostate Center and a private practice for several years.

Dr. Conterato has been an academic instructor and visiting professor at Rush Medical College. He has been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and has presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology's annual conference.

For a decade, Dr. Conterato has made Castle Connelly’s list of America's Top Doctors®. He is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American College of Radiation Oncology and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Conterato was raised on a small farm 50 miles south of Chicago, where he gained an appreciation for the outdoors and nature. Many of his interests are related to the outdoors, such as hiking, fishing, photography, and bike riding. Dr. Conterato has ridden his bicycle from California to Chicago—twice.

He treasures his time with his family. He and his wife (who is also a doctor) have three sons.

Dr. Conterato notes, “We’ve always had dinner together after everyone has completed their work or after-school activities. We really enjoy our time together.”
