"I try to be present for patients and quiet the many distractions around them, so they are able to hear, feel and understand things more clearly. I believe this leads to an increased self-awareness, and in turn fosters greater outcomes in many aspects of their lives. I strive for this balance."
Craig Peterson, ND, LAc
Naturopathic Resident
Craig Peterson, a naturopathic resident at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern), strives to help cancer patients improve their overall wellness and quality of life.
In November 2011, Peterson began a two-year naturopathic oncology residency at Midwestern. The residency entails oncology-focused rotations with staff naturopathic providers, oncologists and other clinicians at the hospital. Peterson’s training includes supervised clinical practice in oncology, homeopathic, nutritional and botanical medicine, as well as coursework in these modalities.
Additionally, Peterson educates patients about naturopathic medicine and a healthy lifestyle. He teaches them about natural therapies they can take to minimize treatment side effects, bolster immune function and improve their general health.
He adds of his role at CTCA, “I am also working in the CTCA employee wellness program, participating in the development of research on natural therapies, writing articles and offering educational presentations. These are some of the ways in which I am able to share my passion for naturopathic medicine.”
Peterson earned a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine and a master of science degree in acupuncture and Oriental medicine from Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington. He received a bachelor of science degree in biology/pre-med from the University of Minnesota.
For more than 10 years, Peterson worked for Outward Bound Wilderness in Golden, Colorado. He served in a number of roles for the organization which offers wilderness expeditions and courses.
Peterson belongs to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians as well as the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
Outside of his profession, Peterson says he enriches his life with family and friends, nature, enjoying delicious meals, reading and exercising.
