Colleen Mooney, MS, MPH, RD, LDN
Clinical Oncology Dietitian

Building relationships with patients at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center means the world to registered and licensed dietitian Colleen Mooney.

She says nutrition therapy is incredibly important for cancer patients because patients often experience symptoms that affect their ability to intake nutrition. Nausea, decrease or loss of appetite, mouth sores, and difficulty swallowing are some examples of nutrition impact symptoms Mooney helps her patients manage. She also monitors patients’ weight changes and activity levels, and assesses for the appropriateness of nutrition supplementation or support.

She meets with patients regularly, addressing nutrition-related questions or concerns as they arise. In addition, she works closely with her patients’ other care team members on a daily basis, helping ensure the care patients receive is responsive and comprehensive.

Mooney adds of the nutrition team’s role in patient care at CTCA, “We address bone health and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. And, we constantly keep an eye out for new research and trends in cancer and food, allowing us to better educate patients and answer their questions.”

Mooney received a bachelor’s degree in human nutrition and dietetics from Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. She then earned master’s degrees in public health and nutrition and wellness from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. As part of Benedictine’s graduate program, she completed a dietetic internship.

A member of the American Dietetic Association, Mooney serves on the association’s dietetic practice group for oncology nutrition. She also belongs to the Illinois Dietetic Association.
