"I try to give patients options and come up with a plan with them. It's about what feels comfortable to them. I also try to be conscious of their need to travel to and from the hospital, and their time and expenses. I encourage them to consider all of these factors and decide."
Dr. Ashwin Sheelvanth
Hematologist-Oncologist & Medical Oncologist
Dr. Ashwin Sheelvanth says the integrated model of care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) drew him to the network of cancer hospitals’ location in Illinois, CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center.
“The integrated team approach makes CTCA different from other hospitals and cancer treatment facilities,” he says. “Here I can work with other clinicians to provide conventional medicine, nutrition, naturopathic medicine, and other therapies—all as integral parts of their treatment.”
Joining CTCA also offered Dr. Sheelvanth the chance to leave a busy private practice, where he was bogged down with administrative responsibilities (e.g., billing). Because CTCA has an entire staff that handles such matters, he can truly focus on caring for his patients.
Many of Dr. Sheelvanth’s patients are fighting gastrointestinal cancers, such as advanced stage esophageal, colon or rectal cancer. He says some patients have been treated by two or three other oncologists and have been on three or four different treatment regimens. Dr. Sheelvanth is determined to find the right treatment for each of his patients, helping them to aggressively fight the disease and improve their quality of life.
Board certified in hematology and medical oncology, Dr. Sheelvanth earned a medical degree from J.J.M. Medical College in Davangere, India. He completed a residency and fellowship at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York.
Prior to serving CTCA patients, Dr. Sheelvanth practiced medical oncology and hematology at Tri-Valley Oncology Hematology Associates in Westlake Village, California. He also garnered experience at two other oncology facilities in the Midwest.
Dr. Sheelvanth has conducted research in association with Sarah Cannon Research Institute and the Translational Oncology Research International (TORI) Network with UCLA. He has been published in the journals Medical Oncology and the British Journal of Haematology. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
Family is very important to Dr. Sheelvanth. He and his wife (who is currently in medical school) have two young boys. The good-humored doctor is also an avid tennis player and fan.
