Psychoneuroimmunology is the study of how the mind affects the body. The Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) Department, or Mind-Body Medicine Team, is designed to provide patients with support and help them take care of themselves during and after the treatment experience. This support helps people respond to their illness very effectively. The physically demanding treatment regimen most patients experience can cause nausea, vomiting, muscle tension and lost sleep. Thus, if the patient so desires, the Mind-Body Medicine Department is available to meet and discuss whatever is on the patient’s mind. To assist with this effort, Mind-Body Medicine teaches classes on relaxation and stress management techniques (i.e. guided imagery). Providing these helpful tools and techniques helps people with cancer deal with any physical and emotional issues that may arise during this time.
