What is Metastatic Cancer?

Metastatic cancer occurs when cancer cells break away from a cancerous tumor and travel to other areas of the body and continue to grow. The site of the original cancer is called the "primary" site and the cancer that forms in the new area is called metastatic cancer. For example, cancer may start in the lungs, and spread to other organs such as the colon. In this case, the lung cancer would be the primary cancer and the secondary site would be metastatic cancer. When metastatic cancer spreads, it continues to be named after the primary site of the cancer. So, if the cancer starts in the lungs and spreads to the colon, it is considered metastatic lung cancer, not metastatic colon cancer.

The development of metastatic cancer is different than cancer that continues to grow and spread to other nearby organs. Unlike cancers that spread locally, metastatic cancer spreads through the bloodstream or lymph system. It is important to understand and identify the difference between the different ways cancer spreads. Knowing how the cancer has spread may affect the treatment approaches used, as well as the metastatic cancer prognosis.

How is Metastatic Cancer Treated?

The treatment options used to treat metastatic cancer depend on a number of factors. These factors can include where the primary cancer site is and where it has spread to, the overall health of the patient, and treatment options that may have already been used. For many metastatic cancer patients, a combination of treatments is used in the treatment process. This combination of treatment options may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, as well as alternative and complementary medicines.

At CTCA, we take an innovative approach to cancer treatment that combines a variety of different types of metastatic cancer treatments to provide what we believe is a more comprehensive treatment plan. Our dedicated team of experts combine the most up-to-date cancer treatments with new complementary and alternative treatment options to create a metastatic cancer treatment plan based on your individual needs.
