Understanding Mesothelioma Symptoms

The majority of mesotheliomas occur in the pleural (lung) cavity. However, the cancer may affect the mesothelial membrane linings as well.

Mesotheliomas may also occur in the peritoneal (stomach) cavity, the pericardium (heart) sac and, very rarely, the covering layer on the testicles (the tunica vaginalis). The symptoms may vary depending on where the cancer occurs.

Pleural mesotheliomas are the most common, followed by peritoneal mesotheliomas. The frequency of pericardium mesothelioma and mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis is quite low and the symptoms are not well understood.

Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms

The symptoms associated with pleural mesothelioma may be similar to other conditions affecting the lungs or chest. Pleural effusion, a complication of the disease, is the build-up of fluid in the chest and may cause difficulty breathing.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Pain or difficult breathing (pleurisy)
  • Chest pain
  • A dry cough, sometimes painful
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Weakness and/or fatigue

An individual may also experience other symptoms like back pain, a feeling of weakness, or unexplained weight loss.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma Symptoms

Developing tumors in the membrane lining the stomach cavity may cause pain in the abdominal region.

Some of these symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Accumulation of fluid in the abdomen (swelling)
  • Diarrhea, constipation or other changes in bowel habits
  • Unexplained weight loss

Symptoms Associated With Other Forms of Mesothelioma

The symptoms associated with pericardium mesothelioma and mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis (the covering on the testicles) are not well known. Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis may produce small hard lumps on the testicles.

It is important to discuss with your doctor any changes in your overall sense of well-being and general health, especially if you have a history or asbestos exposure. Although there may not be obvious symptoms, routine physical exams may increase the chances of detecting and diagnosing these rare forms of cancer.

More on Mesothelioma Symptoms

Noticeable tumors on the chest, abdomen or testicles may be signs of many types of cancer, including mesothelioma. Other symptoms, like coughing or abdominal pain, are common to many other conditions and diseases.

Sometimes it may take several months before these symptoms are recognized as something other than a common ailment. Any symptom that persists or becomes more severe should be evaluated by a doctor, especially if you have any of the known risk factors, including a history of exposure to asbestos.

NOTE: These symptoms may be attributed to a number of conditions other than cancer. It is important to consult with a medical professional for an accurate diagnosis.
