Fluid test for mesothelioma

What is a fluid test?

For a fluid test, doctors will obtain a sample of fluid from your chest, abdomen or surrounding the heart, and have it analyzed in a laboratory to test for cancer cells.

To retrieve a sample, your doctor will most often use an instrument with a thin needle to remove the fluid sample. The process of removing a fluid sample from your chest is known as thoracentesis.

PET/CT scan for mesothelioma

Mesothelioma can cause a buildup of fluid in the chest, abdomen or in the area surrounding the heart. Therefore, a fluid test can help doctors determine whether or not cancer cells are present.
