Our Mind-Body Medicine program (psychoneuroimmunology, or PNI) naturally reflects this integrative approach to treatment for melanoma, offering a range of individual and group learning opportunities that explore the relationship between physical wellness and mental and emotional wellness.
Designed to complement other conventional melanoma treatments offered at our cancer hospitals, this program offers a range of individual and group learning opportunities to help patients and their loved ones explore how emotional, mental, social, spiritual and behavioral factors can directly affect the healing process.
What is psychoneuroimmunology?
Mind-body medicine is based on a relatively new area of care called psychoneuroimmunology. "Psycho" refers to your thinking, emotions and mood states. "Neuro" refers to the neurological and neuroendocrine systems in your body. "Immunology" refers to your cellular structures and immune system. Psychoneuroimmunology explores the close relationship between the nervous and immune systems, uncovering ways in which the mind can help facilitate a healing process in the body. Using a variety of techniques, mind-body medicine helps you direct your energies toward healing and health during your melanoma treatment.
