TheraSphere® is a treatment for lung cancer that has metastasized to the liver. This innovative therapy delivers radiation directly to liver tumors using tiny glass beads, called microspheres.
TheraSphere® Treatment for Lung Cancer
When lung cancer spreads, the liver is a common site for metastatic disease. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), we offer TheraSphere®, an innovative therapy that delivers radiation directly to tumors in the liver.
ThereSphere delivers radiation through a catheter that is positioned in the liver’s main blood vessel, the hepatic artery. Once in place, tiny glass beads, called microspheres, are inserted into the catheter where they can enter the smaller blood vessels supplying the tumor and block the flow of blood. Then, the microspheres emit radiation to destroy cancer cells in the tumor. Each microsphere measures about one-third the thickness of a human hair.
TheraSphere treatment is performed on an outpatient basis, and typically offers fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy and radiation therapy by sparing more healthy tissue in the liver.
