New Horizons in Lung Cancer Treatment

It is important that you select a lung cancer treatment center that uses the latest technology to help diagnose and treat cancer. It is equally important to undergo lung cancer treatment at a cancer center that offers advanced and innovative therapies. Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) is such a place. We never stop searching for and providing powerful and innovative therapies to help heal the whole person, improve quality of life and restore hope.

Cancer treatment technology/tools, such as brachytherapy, dramatically reduce lung cancer treatment times, so you can spend more time with loved ones. High-Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy catheters are implanted into your bronchus (breathing tube) for about 30 minutes, delivering a radioactive dose directly to the tumor site, without affecting the surrounding, healthy lung tissue.

TomoTherapy® enables your CTCA care team to retreat previously treated areas that have a recurrence of cancer. This new therapy combines an advanced form of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) with CT scanning technology. It allows us to deliver radiation to hard-to-reach areas. CTCA hospitals are among the few medical facilities in the world offering this promising new lung cancer treatment.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) can be used to help open up a blocked airway, treat a very early stage lung cancer or treat a previously treated lung cancer. PDT involves injecting photoporphyrin, a chemical substance, into the bloodstream. Tumor cells absorb the photoporphyrin, priming the site for treatment. After 24 to 48 hours, a laser light is directed through a bronchoscope to activate the photoporphyrin to help destroy the exposed tumor cells.

Fractionated-dose chemotherapy is another lung cancer treatment that oncologists at CTCA have offered for several years to qualifying patients. With fractionated-dose chemotherapy, your full chemo treatment is given in smaller amounts over a number of days rather than in a large, single dose (as with standard chemotherapy). We believe that fractionated-dose chemotherapy can make chemotherapy more tolerable by reducing some of the unpleasant side effects typically associated with chemo treatments.

These are just some examples of innovative treatments we offer at CTCA. Contact one of our Oncology Information Specialists today to discuss lung cancer treatment options which may be right for you.
