Metronomic Chemotherapy for Lung Cancer

The lung cancer team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) offers innovative chemotherapy delivery options to treat some of our patients. Metronomic chemotherapy is well tolerated by many patients who cannot receive full dosages of chemotherapy. In this method of chemottherapy delivery, the drugs are administered in smaller doses over a period of several days, rather than as one large dose.

Metronomic chemotherapy is helpful for lung cancer patients who feel weak or have low blood counts, because the impact on the body is less severe. The lower doses may also help to reduce some common side effects of chemotherapy, such as nausea and vomiting.

In addition, metronomic chemotherapy offers the added benefit of extended exposure to chemotherapy drugs in the blood. Cancer cells are always dividing and are most sensitive to chemotherapy drugs during division.

Metronomic chemotherapy can be used for virtually any solid tumor. Your CTCA care team will determine the appropriate dosing for you, based on lung cancer type, stage and tumor characteristics. Metronomic chemotherapy is often used in conjunction with radiation therapy to sensitize a tumor to the effects of radiation.
