Biotherapy / Immunotherapy for Liver Cancer
All types of cancer, including liver cancer, are known to develop in part as a result of a compromise in immune system function. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), we believe that liver cancer treatment is enhanced first by understanding, and then leveraging, your body's own power of protection.
Immunotherapy works to do just that—by harnessing the cancer-fighting power of your body’s own immune system. Also known as biologic therapy, biotherapy, or biological response modifier therapy, immunotherapy can help boost or restore the ability of the immune system to fight liver cancer. Immunotherapy can also be used to help lessen the side effects liver cancer treatment.
By repairing, stimulating, or enhancing your body’s own immune responses, biotherapy may help strengthen your body during liver cancer treatment. At CTCA, we provide biotherapy treatments, such as interferon and colony stimulating factors. These treatments are used either alone, or in conjunction with other conventional modalities, such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
Biotherapy may be used to:
- Stop, control, or suppress processes that permit cancer growth
- Make cancer cells more recognizable, and therefore more susceptible, to destruction by the immune system
- Boost the killing power of immune system cells, such as T-cells, NK-cells, and macrophages
- Alter cancer cells' growth patterns to promote behavior like that of healthy cells
- Block or reverse the process that changes a normal cell or a pre-cancerous cell into a cancerous cell
- Enhance your body’s ability to repair or replace normal cells damaged or destroyed by other forms of cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation
- Prevent liver cancer cells from spreading to other parts of your body
