TMI for leukemia

What is TMI?

Total marrow irradiation (TMI) is an advanced form of total body irradiation (TBI). This radiation therapy allows us to deliver precisely focused radiation to the major marrow sites where the cancer cells reside. Marrow is the soft, sponge-like tissue found inside most bones.

Using TomoTherapy®, TMI targets the radiation dosage to the skeletal bone structure, helping to improve recovery time and reduce radiation exposure to healthy organs.

TMI for leukemia

TMI is commonly used for leukemia patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. This radiation therapy allows us to deliver precisely focused radiation to the major marrow sites where the leukemia cells reside.

TMI treatments for leukemia target the radiation dosage to the skeletal bone structure, helping to improve recovery time and reduce radiation exposure to healthy organs. When used before a stem cell transplant, TMI can help the body make room for new, healthy bone marrow cells and help prevent the body’s rejection of the donated stem cells.

Helping you maintain your quality of life

Your care team will proactively manage radiation-induced side effects. Throughout your TMI treatment for leukemia, you will receive integrative oncology services, such as such as nutrition therapy, naturopathic medicine, pain management and mind-body medicine. These therapies can help keep you strong, avoid treatment interruptions and improve your quality of life throughout your care.
