Chiropractic Care for Leukemia

Leukemia and its treatment can cause significant stress on your musculoskeletal system (your bones, muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments). You may experience aches and pains in your neck and/or back, headaches, or difficulty walking.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) offers chiropractic care to restore the frame of the body so it can work more efficiently as a whole.

When used during your leukemia treatment, chiropractic care can help correct bone, muscle and joint problems and restore nerve function. It may also help to increase mobility, improve posture, relieve headaches, and alleviate neck and low back pain/stiffness.

Your Individual Chiropractic Evaluation

Depending on your individual diagnosis and leukemia treatment regime, your CTCA leukemia care team may recommend a consultation with a chiropractor.

During the initial meeting, your chiropractor will review your symptoms and perform a thorough history and physical assessment. If your care team determines chiropractic care is safe and appropriate*, your chiropractor will work with you and your oncologists to develop a plan.

Chiropractic Techniques During Leukemia Treatment

During your leukemia treatment, our licensed chiropractors may use any of the following non-invasive manual techniques:

  • Hands-on adjustments
  • Massage
  • Stretching
  • Electrical stimulation of the muscles
  • Traction
  • Heat
  • Ice
  • Application of special instruments
  • Non-force techniques (e.g., SOT blocks placed on pelvis)

Throughout your leukemia treatment, your leukemia care team will consistently monitor your scans and X-rays, as well as your lab results, to ensure safe delivery of care. After your treatment is complete, your chiropractor can arrange for you to continue chiropractic treatment near your home.

*While chiropractic care can be helpful to many leukemia patients, it may not be for everyone. For example, chiropractic care is not recommended if bone metastasis is found or your platelet counts are low.
