Information on Laryngeal Cancer
Cancer of the larynx, or laryngeal cancer, can develop in any part of the larynx. Most occurrences of laryngeal cancer begin in the glottis. The glottis is the middle part of the larynx where the vocal cords are located. Most cases of laryngeal cancer are considered squamous cell carcinomas because they begin in the squamous cells that line the walls of the larynx.
When laryngeal cancer metastasizes, it often first spreads to the nearby lymph nodes in the neck, tongue, other parts of the neck, and the lungs. When laryngeal cancer metastasizes, the new area affected is still considered to be laryngeal cancer.
Risk Factors & Symptoms of Laryngeal Cancer
The primary risk factors for laryngeal cancer include age and race. Risk factors of laryngeal cancer that can be influenced include smoking, alcohol abuse and a poor nutritional diet.
The primary symptom of laryngeal cancer is hoarseness. This hoarseness is often progressive or persistent. Other potential symptoms of laryngeal cancer are:
- Pain or difficulty swallowing
- Sudden, unexplained change in the voice
- Pain in the ear that does not go away
- A lump in the neck
If you experience any of these potential symptoms of laryngeal cancer, please visit a medical professional. Although these symptoms of laryngeal cancer can also be caused by other issues, only a medical professional can tell for sure.
Laryngeal Cancer Treatment
At CTCA we offer a comprehensive array of treatment options, including conventional, complementary, and alternative treatments. Our integrated cancer treatment model is designed to fight cancer on all fronts and keeps you at the center of your treatment team.
Conventional Laryngeal Cancer Treatments
There are a number of conventional treatment options available, and new methods of delivering those treatments are being research continuously. Conventional laryngeal cancer treatments include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, biotherapy, local hyperthermia.
Radiation is the use of high-energy rays to destroy or slow tumor growth. It may be used alone or in conjunction with other therapies. Innovative techniques such as 3-D Conformal Radiation, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and others represent the most recent breakthroughs in radiation therapy and enable the tumor to be treated more precisely.
Chemotherapy for laryngeal cancer using powerful drugs that destroy cancer cells. Because chemotherapy can cause unpleasant side effects, your CTCA team will work to reduce them and improve quality of life.
Biotherapy/Immunotherapy leverages and strengthens your body's own immune system to more effectively fight laryngeal cancer and cope with the side effects of treatment.
Local hyperthermia treats laryngeal cancer by heating the tissue to high temperatures, which can kill the cancer cells and make them more sensitive to radiation.
Complementary and Alternative Treatments
Encompassing a wide range of approaches and therapies, complementary and alternative laryngeal cancer treatments are designed to support physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being while complementing conventional treatments. These additional options include nutritional therapy, naturopathic medicine, pain management, physical therapy, mind body medicine, spiritual support, and image enhancement. At CTCA we treat more than just your cancer, we treat all of you.
