Laryngeal Cancer Treatment: TomoTherapy®
TomoTherapy® is a promising new form of radiotherapy available for laryngeal cancer treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA).
The TomoTherapy® Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy (HI-ART) System® is unique because it integrates several advanced tools for radiation therapy planning and delivery into a single machine. It combines the power of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (cited as the most important breakthrough in radiation therapy in the past 30 years) with the accuracy of CT scanning for improved targeting and delivery.
Benefits of using TomoTherapy® for laryngeal cancer treatment include the following:
- Small, but powerful beams of radiation that vary in intensity can be precisely sculpted to hit hard-to-reach laryngeal tumors.
- Radiation beams can be directed onto tumors from a full 360 degrees, instead of only from a few directions.
- Built-in CT scanning improves tumor targeting by allowing our radiation therapists to confirm the shape and position of the laryngeal tumor seconds before administering treatment.
- Radiation exposure to healthy surrounding, laryngeal tissue is reduced, often dramatically.
TomoTherapy® may open new doors to treatment for laryngeal cancer patients who have already reached their maximum tolerance dose of traditional radiation. In addition, TomoTherapy® may be an option for laryngeal cancer patients whose tumor is located in a difficult-to-reach area.
