Also known as interstitial irradiation, High-Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy is an innovative form of internal radiotherapy (radiation treatments) offered for laryngeal cancer treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA).
This aggressive approach to laryngeal cancer treatment is unique because it delivers radiation internally, rather than through external radiation beams. Brachytherapy places the radiation directly where you need it most—inside the cancerous laryngeal tumor. This allows the maximum dose of radiation to be tightly focused in the site of the cancer. As a result, less radiation reaches healthy surrounding laryngeal tissues.
Brachytherapy for laryngeal cancer treatment can be an alternative to surgical removal of the tumor and/or affected organs. Additional benefits of HDR brachytherapy include:
- This laryngeal cancer treatment takes days instead of several weeks.
- Side effects may be reduced because HDR brachytherapy does not cause irritation and burning to your skin that is sometimes associated with external radiation.
