Laryngeal Cancer Treatment: Biotherapy/Immunotherapy
The immune system is your body's own unique power of protection against bacteria, viruses and disease. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), we believe that laryngeal cancer treatment is enhanced first by understanding, and then utilizing, the inherent power of the immune system to help fight disease.
Immunotherapy (sometimes called biological therapy, biotherapy or biological response modifier therapy) is a particular approach to laryngeal cancer treatment which enlists the forces of your body's immune system, either directly or indirectly, in the fight against cancer.
When the immune system breaks down or is impaired, it can leave your body in a weakened state that allows cancerous cells to proliferate. A dysfunctional immune system can also make it that much harder for you to recover from other forms of laryngeal cancer treatment, such as radiation, chemotherapy or surgery.
Biotherapy is designed to repair, stimulate or enhance your body's own immune system response. Innovative therapies (e.g., interferon and colony stimulating factors) are used at CTCA, either alone or in conjunction with other conventional methods of laryngeal cancer treatment.
Biotherapy may be used to:
- Stop, control or suppress processes that permit growth of laryngeal cancer cells
- Make laryngeal cancer cells more recognizable, and therefore, more susceptible to destruction by your immune system
- Boost the killing power of your immune system cells (e.g., T-cells, NK-cells, macrophages)
- Alter laryngeal cancer cells' growth patterns to promote behavior like that of healthy cells
- Block or reverse the process that changes a normal cell or a precancerous cell into a cancerous cell
- Enhance your body's ability to repair or replace normal cells damaged or destroyed by other forms of laryngeal cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation
- Prevent laryngeal cancer cells from spreading to other parts of your body
