Urinalysis for kidney cancer

What is a urinalysis?

Urinalysis is a test that is used to detect disease or illness in the body, such as kidney cancer. During a urinalysis, your doctor will check the appearance and concentration of your urine.

If a urinalysis shows abnormal results, additional tests are performed to determine next steps.

Urinalysis for kidney cancer

In some cases, urinalysis is used to look for blood in the urine. Because blood in the urine can be caused by an infection or other benign conditions, before making a cancer diagnosis, we examine the urine cells under a special microscope that allows us to detect cancerous activity, called urine cytology.
