Hodgkin's Lymphoma: A Rare Disease

Hodgkin's disease is also known as Hodgkin's lymphoma. Hodgkin's is one of two types of lymphomas. The other type of lymphoma is known as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Hodgkin's disease is so rare that it accounts for less than a percent of cancers cases in the United States. Hodgkin's lymphoma is more curable than non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. To find out more about non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, follow this link: CTCA: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma Risk Factors

According to the National Cancer Institute, researchers have found certain risk factors that are more common in people who get Hodgkin's lymphoma than in those who do not. However, most people with these risk factors do not get Hodgkin's lymphoma, and many who do get Hodgkin's lymphoma have none of the known risk factors.

Some risk factors associated with Hodgkin's lymphoma include:

Age/Sex - Hodgkin's lymphoma occurs most often in people between the ages of 15 and 34 and in people over the age of 55. Hodgkin's lymphoma is more common in men than in women.

Family History - Brothers and sisters of those who have developed Hodgkin's lymphoma have a higher-than-average chance of developing this Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Viruses - According to the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, it is now known that environmental toxins such as pesticides can increase the risk of developing Hodgkin's lymphoma.
