TheraSphere® - An innovative new internal radiation therapy used to treat inoperable forms of liver cancer (e.g., hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC). TheraSphere® offers a potentially less toxic alternative to traditional chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments. During the procedure, a catheter is guided into the hepatic artery (the liver's main blood vessel). Then, tiny radioactive glass beads (called microspheres) pass through the catheter into the tumor's blood supply, blocking the flow of blood and delivering radiation directly into the liver tumor. With its precise method of targeting, TheraSphere® can help reduce exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
