Stem Cell - A type of cell with the unique ability to replicate itself (proliferation/self-renewal), and mature into different types of cells (differentiation). Serving as a repair system for the body, unspecialized stem cells can develop into almost any type of cell with a more specialized function. Stem cells produce the three main types of blood cells: red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (blood-clotting cells). Stem cells can be found in the bone marrow (as hematopoietic, or blood-forming, stem cells), circulating blood, and umbilical cord blood.
