Radiation - Energy in the form of rays, waves or particles. Ionizing radiation can be used in cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment. Radiation is used in cancer diagnosis and staging to construct images of where and how cancer occurs in the body through sophisticated imaging technologies. Radiation is used in cancer treatment via external radiation beams or x-rays (external radiation therapy) and/or radioactive substances delivered internally (internal radiation therapy) to help shrink or kill cancerous cells.
