Osteoporosis - An abnormal reduction in bone mass and density. Osteoporosis occurs when bone is no longer replaced as quickly as it is removed. Thus, osteoporosis leads to porous and fragile bones, which are subject to fracture and slow to heal from injury. Four times more likely to occur in women than in men, the risk of osteoporosis may be reduced through a healthy diet (especially calcium and vitamin D), and weight-bearing exercises that help increase bone density.
