Oncogene - A type of gene that contributes to the production of cancerous cells. While normally inactive (proto-oncogenes), an active oncogene is capable of altering the cell division process, leading to the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells and formation of tumors. Gene alterations may be inherited, or caused by an environmental exposure to carcinogens, etc.
