Lumpectomy - Surgery to remove a tumor and a small amount of normal tissue around it. Used as a breast cancer surgery, the term lumpectomy, also called breast conservation therapy or breast-conserving surgery, removes only the portion of the breast that is infected with cancer (the breast lump) and a surrounding margin of normal tissue. A lumpectomy differs from a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast.
