Infection - The presence of non-native pathogenic microorganisms (germs) in the body, such as bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Often times, the presence of infection is marked by a fever, as the body raises its temperature in an attempt to destroy the invading microorganism(s). Some cancer treatments can weaken the body's natural defense system and cause infection.
