Hairy Cell Leukemia Treatment - Hairy cell leukemia treatment plans are based on a number of factors, including the progression of the cancer as well as the patient's age and general health. Some common hairy cell leukemia treatment options include various forms of chemotherapy and biological therapy/immunotherapy (e.g., interferons, monoclonal antibodies). Surgery may also be given as a palliative treatment, usually to remove a ruptured spleen or a swollen spleen that is causing great pain or discomfort (splenectomy). Because hairy cell leukemia is a slow-progressing disease that is treatable in all stages, some prefer to receive treatment only if the disease begins to cause symptoms.
