Erbitux® - The brand name for the generic drug cetuximab, Erbitux® is a monoclonal antibody used to interfere with the growth of cancer cells. Erbitux® is most often used in treating some colorectal cancers that have spread to other parts of the body, as well as some types of head and neck cancers.
Erbitux®works by binding to, and blocking, a type of protein called the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), thus inhibiting tumor growth. Erbitux® is administered intravenously. It can be used in combination with Camptosar® (another chemotherapy drug) in treating tumors which have spread after being initially treated with Camptosar®. Erbitux® may also be used as a stand-alone chemotherapy treatment for patients who cannot tolerate Camptosar®. In addition, Erbitux® can be used in combination with radiation therapy for the treatment of a certain type of locally or regionally advanced head and neck cancer.
