Ependymoma - A rare type of glioma (brain cancer which develops in glial cells). Ependymomas may begin in the ependyma or the ventricles. The ependyma refers to cells that line the passageways in the central nervous system where cerebrospinal fluid is stored (spinal cord central canal). The ventricles are the areas of the brain that produce and store cerebrospinal fluid (which protects the brain and spinal cord). In children, ependymoma most commonly develops in the cerebrum (the main area of the brain). In adults, ependymoma is mostly found in the spinal cord. Also called ependymal tumor.
