Electrocardiography - A noninvasive diagnostic procedure which monitors heart activity. Electrocardiography involves the use of a cardiograph, which is a special type of machine that traces and follows heart beats over time and displays the information on a graph. The test checks for problems with the electrical activity of the heart. Specifically, an electrocardiogram can be used to check the health of the heart, diagnose heart conditions, and find the cause of symptoms (e.g., unexplained chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness). An electrocardiogram is abbreviated as EKG or ECG.
