Efudex® - The brand name for the generic drug fluorouracil (also called 5-FU), Efudex® is most commonly used in fighting precancerous and cancerous skin growths, including actinic and solar keratoses, which appear on the skin as small, red, wart-like growths. Efudex® is a type of antimetabolite, and works to block the growth of abnormal cells that cause the skin condition.
Efudex® is used as a topical cream or solution. Thus, common side effects can include changes at the site of application, such as the following: irritation, inflammation, swelling, dryness, tenderness, burning, or pain. These side effects typically subside and heal upon completion of treatment. Other forms of fluorouracil may be injected into a vein.
