Carcinoma In Situ - An early stage epithelial cell cancer (cancer that begins in the cells that line an internal organ) that is still confined to the primary site from which it started, and has not spread (metastasized). Carcinoma in situ is distinguished from invasive carcinoma (which has spread to surrounding tissue) and metastatic carcinoma (which has spread throughout the body to other tissues and organs). Carcinoma in situ is also called in situ cancer.
