Carcinogen - Any substance capable of causing, promoting or aggravating cancer (whereby normal cells are transformed into cancer cells). Carcinogens do not cause cancer all the time, in every case. Some carcinogens may cause cancer only after prolonged, high levels of exposure. Examples of common carcinogens include tobacco, asbestos and lead.
