Antibiotic - A drug used to treat infections by killing or preventing the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. In some cancer treatment regimens (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation therapy), antibiotics are administered pre-treatment to bolster the body's immune system and/or post-treatment to prevent infections and help support the production of new white blood cells (i.e., replacing the white blood cells lost or damaged during treatment).
