Cancer Treatments - TomoTherapy

At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), we offer the TomoTherapy® Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy (HI-ART) system to target esophageal cancer with complete precision. This form of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) incorporates the advantages of CT scanning technology for accurate radiation therapy treatment that spares nearby healthy tissue.

The radiation beams used during TomoTherapy are aimed directly at the cancerous tissue, with the help of built-in CT scanning. This allows your radiation oncologist to maintain a clear picture of the tumor’s location throughout your radiation treatment.

The TomoTherapy machine has a unique circular structure that allows the radiation beams to target cancer from any angle of the body, resulting in a more precise treatment.

As an esophageal cancer treatment, TomoTherapy offers several advantages:

  • Before every treatment, advanced scanning technology provides a 3D image of the body, so the radiation beams can be targeted according to the size, shape and location of the tumor(s) on that specific day.
  • During treatment, we can adjust the intensity and direction of the radiation beams in real time. The revolutionary “slice therapy” approach treats tumors one layer at a time.
  • After treatment, side effects are minimized because less radiation reaches healthy tissues and organs.

If you have reached your maximum tolerance dose of conventional radiation therapy, TomoTherapy for esophageal cancer may still be an option.
