Symptoms of Esophageal Cancer

The esophagus is the primary pathway connecting the mouth to the stomach. For this reason, as cancer develops in the esophagus, it may become more difficult or even painful to swallow certain foods.

Many of the symptoms associated with esophageal cancer are located in the throat region. However, you may experience some effects from the localized symptoms. For example, when swallowing solid foods becomes difficult, you may experience weight loss. In many cases, the symptoms only become apparent in more advanced stages, as the growth of tumors affects the ability to swallow food and liquids.

The following are some potential symptoms of esophageal cancer:

  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) - As the disease progresses, the difficulty to swallow increases. Certain foods, like breads and meat, may become stuck in the throat.
  • Weight loss - Dysphagia can make it more difficult to eat and the avoidance of solid foods can lead to weight loss.
  • Regurgitation or vomiting - Heartburn and hiccups may also become more frequent. There may also be blood in the vomit.
  • Chest or throat pain - Swallowing, coughing, vomiting and hiccups may cause throat pain. The pressure of the tumor may also cause general throat or chest pain.

NOTE: These symptoms may be attributed to a number of conditions other than cancer, such as an infection or other illness. It is important to consult with a medical professional for an accurate diagnosis.

Related Conditions

Barrett's esophagus, a condition where the cells in the lining of the esophagus change, is a risk factor for esophageal cancer. This condition is likely linked to the repeated backflow of stomach acid, as is the case in chronic acid reflux. However, there are usually no obvious symptoms of Barrett's esophagus.

Heartburn and throat pain may also be related to other digestive diseases, like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Other symptoms, like vomiting or regurgitation, could be signs of other health problems or eating disorders that require treatment.

Understanding Your Esophageal Symptoms

Cancerous growths could potentially cause blockages in the esophagus, making it difficult to eat. Any difficulty swallowing poses other health risks, like choking or vomiting, which may cause further damage to the esophagus. These kinds of symptoms may not become known until the cancer has developed—and as the disease progresses, these symptoms may intensify and become more persistent.

Esophageal cancer symptoms may be signs of other conditions or related digestive diseases. However, because signs of esophageal cancer usually do not appear until the disease has developed beyond the early stages, it is important to see a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Having one or more of these symptoms does not mean you have esophageal cancer. A physical exam and imaging tests can help your doctor evaluate the cause of your symptoms.
