Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine

Our department

Naturopathic oncology providers are specialists in our integrative treatment program at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA). Naturopathic medicine supports oncology patients undergoing conventional treatment and in survivorship by providing supportive therapies to help with:

  • Reducing harmful side effects from  cancer treatments such as nausea, pain or fatigue
  • Supporting immune function to help you feel strong and healthy
  • Improving  quality of life

Naturopathic medicine uses evidence-based therapies designed to work in conjunction with conventional treatment.  Naturopathic medicine providers review and monitor your dietary supplements to help protect you from potential drug-herb and drug-nutrient interactions. Your naturopathic oncology provider at CTCA® acts as a consultant to your oncologist.

Naturopathic therapies

As part of the intake process, you'll meet with your naturopathic oncology provider, who will review your history and make integrative treatment recommendations that may include:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Dietary supplements
  • Botanical and herbal medicines
  • Homeopathic remedies, mainly involving plant extracts and minerals that gently strengthen the body's healing and immune response
  • Physical therapy and exercise therapy, including massage and other gentle techniques applied to deep muscles and joints for therapeutic purposes
  • Lifestyle counseling on managing certain medical conditions with foods and nutritional supplements to reduce complications and side effects
  • Acupuncture provided by some of our naturopathic oncology providers

Our naturopathic oncology providers have extensive knowledge of radiation, chemotherapy and other conventional cancer treatments. They are available to help guide your treatment plan and are in regular communication with your  oncology team at CTCA. The Naturopathic Medicine Department also provides an educational component as well. Programs include information about vitamin and mineral supplements, natural remedies, nutritional guidance, lifestyle changes, stress management techniques and strategies for long-term prevention of cancer recurrence.

The naturopathic medicine team at Eastern

The naturopathic medicine team at CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center includes several naturopathic doctors. Each holds a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from a doctoral-level program accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education. In addition, some have also completed residency programs in naturopathic oncology.

The naturopathic team meets every morning for “alignment." During these meetings, they review schedules, discuss any specific patient issues, and agree on goals for the day. The team also meets monthly to review new data, studies and naturopathic therapies. Additionally, three times a week, the naturopathic team attends endorsement meetings with all the clinical disciplines present.

The naturopathic team also participates in “Comfort Rounds” two times a week for inpatients. These visits occur in the patient’s hospital room and include clinicians from many disciplines to discuss patients' physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, or other concerns.
