“I love working at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) because I have the unique opportunity to support patients and their loved ones during a difficult and, often, vulnerable time,” says Lori Kovell, a mind-body therapist at CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center.
A licensed social worker, Kovell joined the mind-body medicine team at Eastern in October 2011. Kovell provides counseling, support groups, relaxation and stress management techniques to support patients and caregivers through treatment.
“I love knowing that I can make a difference and I aim to do that with each patient encounter. Through the easing of personal pain in the therapeutic process and/or the sharing of a smile, I can make an impact,” Kovell says.
Previously, she served as an oncology discharge planner at Eastern since August 2008. In this role, she assessed patients’ needs for home health services and coordinated their discharge plans.
Before joining CTCA, Kovell was a psychiatric rehabilitation counselor at Welcome House in Upper Darby, PA. There, she provided pre-vocational counseling to individuals seeking employment opportunities and occupational advancement within the community. Prior to that, she spent a year in Australia as a psychiatric rehabilitation counselor at Stepping Stone Clubhouse.
Kovell earned a master’s degree from Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, PA. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Elmira College in New York, where she graduated summa cum laude. She has also received training in cognitive behavioral therapy for depression and anxiety from the Beck Institute in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Kovell is currently working towards an LCSW licensure upgrade.
In her spare time, Kovell enjoys traveling. She and her husband try to visit one new country a year. She enjoys going out to different restaurants, and admits she likes dive restaurants and diner food the best. She also likes running, and plans to run in her first 5K and 10K this summer. She and her husband have a cat named Liberty Belle.
