A naturopathic doctor at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Eastern Regional Medical Center (Eastern), Dr. Heather Wright is part of a unique approach to patient care.

A Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO), Dr. Wright earned a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington. She completed post-baccalaureate premedical studies at Tufts University and Northeastern University, both in Boston. She holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York.

Dr. Wright also completed an internship in East Africa, where she worked with a World Health Organization (WHO)-sponsored NGO (non-governmental organization) in community medicine.

Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Wright worked as a naturopathic doctor/oncology consultant at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, New York. There, she collaborated with oncologists and other medical doctors to serve patients in an integrative care setting. She also worked closely with the other medical providers and support staff to provide information and research on the efficacy of whole foods nutrition, supplements, exercise, meditation, breathing exercises and homeopathy.

In addition, Dr. Wright worked privately as a spa & wellness consultant at WellSpace Naturopathic Wellness Consulting in Canton, New York. There, she provided clients with expertise in incorporating the dynamics of hydrotherapy and spa into both professional and private settings. Dr. Wright also worked one-on-one with clients at WellSpace to use the practical concepts of nutrition, movement and behavior in creating health.

A follower of the teachings of HH the Dalai Lama, Pema Chodron and Thich Naht Hahn, Dr. Wright has intended to help patients develop space in their lives for breathing, listening and meditating. She has also traveled extensively throughout her career to places like Belgium where she studied homeopathy with an expert in the field.

Dr. Wright joined the Naturopathic Medicine Department at Eastern in September 2008. When asked what she likes best about working at CTCA, Dr. Wright says, “I was excited to join CTCA because it is a place where patients have access to integrative medicine in oncology care from a team approach. This is very important.”

Dr. Wright and the rest of the naturopathic medicine team at Eastern work closely with CTCA oncologists and other clinicians to complement patients’ conventional cancer treatments with natural therapies.

“When naturopathic therapies are used safely in conjunction with conventional cancer care, I see patients reduce the need for medication, reduce the incidence and severity of side effects and lessen anxiety. I see patients finding comfort in the whole-person approach,” says Dr. Wright.
