“I am honored to be taking care of patients here,” says Barbara Dehel, Physician Assistant in Gastroenterology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) in Philadelphia.

It was a winding road that brought Dehel to health care. After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism at Shippensburg University in 1984, Dehel worked as a technical writer for large corporations. In 1997, she began serving as a patient advocate with a large health system based in New Jersey, providing counseling and other assistance to emergency room patients and their families. She continued to work with patients in an administrative capacity until 2003, when she returned to school.

In 2006, Dehel completed the Physician Assistant Program at Drexel University, earning her Master of Health Science degree. Her training included clinical experience at several large hospitals in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Since 2008, she has worked as a Physician Assistant at family practices and with the liver disease center at a large regional hospital. Her work has included obtaining patient histories, evaluating patients before and after surgery, reviewing test and imaging results, physical examinations and family counseling. She joined CTCA in May 2014.

Dehel is a Licensed Physician Assistant by the States of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She is a Certified Physician Assistant through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

At CTCA, Dehel provides consultations for patients coping with gastrointestinal malignancies and prepares patients for gastrointestinal surgical procedures.

When she is not at CTCA, Dehel enjoys spending time with her husband, three children and grandchild. She has also been an avid horseback rider.
