Summer Internship Program: WorkReady Partnership
CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center has participated in WorkReady, a city-wide system for youth workforce preparation. CTCA has hired more than 25 interns since 2007 and has increased the number of interns hired each year. The hospital has been recognized at the Breakfast of Work Ready Champions in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Youth Perspective
On January 5, 2012, Tiana Butler, a WorkReady summer intern, sat on a panel moderated by U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan and NAACP President and CEO, Benjamin Todd Jealous. Along with five other youth from across the country, Tiana shared how her WorkReady experience had a positive impact on her life both personally and professionally. She also had the opportunity to meet President Obama and receive a tour of the White House.
Tiana was a WorkReady summer intern at CTCA in 2010 and 2011. She plans to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy, a choice that she attributes to her internship: “I had never even heard of Occupational Therapy until my WorkReady internship at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. My summer job allowed me to find my passion." Get more information about the White House Summer Jobs and Summit.
CEO Testimonial
John McNeil, President and CEO, CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center:
“One of the reasons we chose to participate in WorkReady was because of our commitment to be a good community partner—to give back. Each summer our employees welcome the opportunity to expose students to the healthcare industry and the rewarding work we are blessed to do every day. Since first participating in WorkReady, CTCA has doubled the number of interns year-over-year. We’ve had interns return for a second year and hired recent graduates to work at the hospital on a permanent basis."

Harp Therapy Program: Bedside Harp Partnership
Since June 2010 patients, caregivers and staff at Eastern Regional Medical Center have been delighted, soothed and comforted by the music of professional and intern harp therapists of Bedside Harp. Over the past 10 years, this patient-centered program has taught over 650 people to play the harp for their own healing and enjoyment and has trained and certified nearly 80 harpists to play in healthcare.
Some patient responses: "This music is the best thing that has happened to me since my diagnosis!" and "I felt better the moment you started playing."
