The leading-edge laboratory at Eastern Regional Medical Center offers a wide range of on-site testing. We provide testing in the areas of hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis and transfusion services. Our pathology services are contracted with the Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM) Pathology Department.
The pathology department is comprised of approximately 25 faculty members with various specialties within the practice of Pathology. DUCOM Pathology is the only location in the Delaware Valley having specialized equipment for automated morphometric analysis of tumors and the quantitation of tumor markers. In addition, the department is developing a bio-informatics program to assist in cancer diagnosis and management as well as a molecular diagnostic laboratory that is focused on neoplastic disease. During 2004, the College acquired a state- of–the-art electron microscope for the newly-equipped Sub-specialty Pathology Laboratory (SPL). This year DUCOM is negotiating the purchase of a diagnostic tool for the detection of circulating tumor cells in the blood and anticipate being the only facility in the Delaware Valley to offer this service. All the services provided by the DUCOM pathology department will be available to the patients of Eastern.
The frozen section room at Eastern will be equipped with telepathology. This will allow a technician to prepare frozen section slides from a biopsy taken during surgery and broadcast digital images of the samples to the pathologist, at Drexel, who specializes in that specific type of tissue review.
